Porcelain & Ceramic Tile Installation: DIY or Professional?
Although anyone can install tile, there are a few rules of thumb that you may want to keep in mind before embarking on this process on your own.
How simple is it?
There are different types of tile installation, and some are easier than others to get right. A good rule of thumb for DIYers is that if the tiling involves a secondary process, such as plumbing in a bathroom or shower or electrical installation in the case of radiant heating systems, then it may be a good idea to get some assistance from a professional. That having been said, if you have some past experience in plumbing or electrical repair, you may feel confident to complete this type of project on your own.
How complex is your tile style?
For regular tiling, your ability to complete the task to perfection will depend on what you expect from your tile and, ultimately, what you want it to look like. Some ceramic tiles have a simple installation process, and all that is required is laying out the tile in a straight line on the floor, using the right tools of course. Other tiles, especially those with printed designs, involve more careful processes to ensure that the layout is accurate throughout the space.
Do you want to buy all of the tools?
Although some tiling, such as that on a patio or walkway, is easy to do without any special tools, many tiling projects require cutting tiles, lining them up exactly, and specialized underflooring. If you don’t want to buy everything you need, it might be worthwhile spending a little extra on getting a professional.
How much time do you have?
Last but not least, think about the amount of time you have to dedicate to a tiling project. This should not be a rush job. Think about how much time and effort you would need to put into making things perfect.
